Edmund R. Burke, Ph.D. Ed died while on a bike ride in late 2003. I first got to know Ed when he was the editor of Cycling Science magazine, for which I was a contributing editor and monthly columnist. His wit, intelligence, knowledge and deep love of cycling was a constant light in the bike business. More importantly, he was my friend, and is sorely missed. Ed was Professor and Director of the Exercise Science Program at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. His research interests included cycling performance, sports nutrition, fitness and adaptations to training. He served as Coordinator of Sports Sciences for the U. S. Cycling Team leading up to the Olympic Games in 1996 and was a staff member for the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Cycling Teams. His educational background included a doctorate in Exercise Physiology from Ohio State University, and a master's degree in Exercise Physiology from Ball State University. Dr. Burke was a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He authored or co-authored fifteen books on training, fitness and nutrition including Optimal Muscle Recovery, Serious Cycling and the Complete Book of Long Distance Cycling, was a frequent contributor to VeloNews, and served on the fitness advisory board for Bicycling Magazine. |
